VOLUNTEERS

We are an entirely voluntary organisation with around 50 volunteers. Each of the volunteers belongs to one or more of the following groups:

  • EDITORS. Their task is to read the local press and to prepare a script for the week by chosing from the items of local news those articles, notices, etc. of interest to our readers, bearing in mind any on-going stories already reported in previous newsletters.
  • Our recordings run for around 60 minutes, with the aim to alternate the more serious with light hearted articles.
  • Each editor would expect to do this every five or six weeks.

  • READERS. Our readers operate in teams of two, one female , one male. Their task is, rather obviously, to read the editor's script for the week.
  • They alternate reading the articles in the script.

  • PRODUCERS. There is one producer per recording session whose task is to control the recording equipment and monitor the readers to ensure that a good clear recording is made.
  • Master memory sticks are copied from the final approved recording.

  • PROCESSORS. Probably the least glamorous of our tasks but just as critical to the production of our newsletters. However good the script, the reading and the recordings are, they will not be heard by our listeners unless the master memory sticks are copied to a memory stick for each of our listeners and sent out to them.
  • There are two processing teams. One operates in the morning prior to the recording session, collecting from the Post Office the returned wallets with the memory sticks and taking them to the studio where the wallets are sorted and filed for the copying session the following morning. This team is made up of the same volunteers every week.
  • The team who do the bulk copying on the morning following the recording session of the newsletter, use our fast copying equipment to record a memory stick to be stuffed into a wallet for each of our listeners, the wallets then taken to the Post Office for despatch. The teams who do this task expect to do this every four weeks.
